Hotel Balmaz

Balmazújváros is a characteristic town of the Hungarian Plains, it is situated in the touristic triangle of Debrecen-Hajdúszoboszló-Hortobágy. The towntown is bordered in the East and North-East by the fertile fields of the Hajdúság, in the West and South-West the puszta of Hortobágy, which is the territory of the Hortobágy National Park now.

From the second half of the 15th century it had a rang of a country town, and as a gift of Maria Theresa the family of Andrassy owned it. Germans built the Grossdeutschgasse, the Kossuth utca of today which was the beginning of the town planning, which was the beginning of the construction of the ruled street net by the family Semsey,getting the town in the meantime.

Újváros has a wide range of literatural traditions: Lengyel Menyhért, the world famous dramatist was born here, in 1953 Sarkadi Imre taught here, whose work was the famous film Roundabout made from, featured by the died young famous actor Imre Soós, born also in the town. The most famous man born here was Veres Péter (1897-1970) , a writer.

The community with 18.780 inhabitants got the rank of a town in 1989. It is a member of the Alliance of the Haiduck Towns, Hortobágy, Tiszacsege, Újszentmargita are nearby. In the past decades the reformed and the catholic churches were renewed, the house, where Péter Veres,the writer was born, considered as a monument, the City Hall, whose eclectic stile has a significance in the townscape, the Baroque Local Museum and the church of the German village. Another touristical and cultural place of the towy of importance is the Semsey castle, built in the 1840-ies. Nowadays many people come here because of the spa and the swimming pool, which offers a number of entertainment for its visitors (jacuzzi, water umbrella). The water with hydrogen-carbonate, iodine and brome coming from a depth of 1180 meters at the temperature of 61 centigrades was declared to mineral waters in 1994. This is the most valuable treasure of the town.
